Blog Entry: It is always exciting to attend "adoption" day! Over the years I have been blessed with attending hundreds adoption days all over the State of Maryland in many different courts. The way adoption finalizations are conducted is different from court to court. There are even differences among judges at the same courts. Some are held in the judges' chambers, but most are in the court room. Some are very formal, even stern, with the court rooms cleared and the judge demanding testimony to support granting the adoption. Others are very low key and with the judge clearly very happy to be presiding over such a happy event. While cameras are not allowed in courts, we have been able to get most judges to instruct the deputies in their courts to permit cameras to be bought into the courtroom. Judges, even the stern ones, usually love to be photographed with families and adoptees and will gladly pose with the families. Sometimes they will allow the child to sit on the bench and even bang the gavel.
Adoption day makes for great memories. For the families it is a joyous time. As an adoption attorney it has been wonderful to be able to share this day with them all. I now have hundreds and hundreds of pictures of "my" families taken on "adoption" day. Fantastic!
